THE BURNING GIRL

Photo by Almos Bechtold on Unsplash

I look in the mirror

and hate what I see:

wasted space

staring back at me

like a long lost friend

I’m too bitter to face.

it’s been so long

since we’ve gone

our separate ways,

I can barely recognize

the way she smiles:

counterfeit

and wild.

but the smoke in the mirror

draws me nearer

to the spark inside her

waiting to ignite

a glorious fire,

to catalyze

the entropy

brewing deep

inside of me.

I look in the mirror

and hate what I see:

the charred memory

of the burning girl

I used to be.
