LEARNING TO LOVE

Photo by Ayana Wyse on Unsplash

if you can live without me,

maybe I can, too.

live without you, that is.

maybe I can find a home

in the darkness I roam

while searching for the

girl you broke.

yes – I should build her a home

instead of a tombstone.

I think she would like that.

because, if you can

find yourself after us,

if you can shake off the rust

and run far enough away

to find somewhere you belong,

somewhere safe

for you to stay,

maybe I can, too.

if you can survive the dark night,

stay alive just long enough

to be revived by sunlight,

maybe I can, too.

if you can become

someone better than

the person I loved,

maybe I can, too.

if you can learn

to love someone else

with the same heart

that couldn’t love me,

maybe I can learn

to love myself

in your stead.

because,

if you

of all people

can learn to love,

maybe I can, too.
