CONSUMPTION

person with a nose ring, blood smears around their mouth, tongue sticking out

I can feel you in my bones,

your presence rattling each one.

it’s maddening how deep your memory runs.

I can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t dream

without your face at the forefront of my mind.

I feel you all the time.

I’m battling you like a demon, a shadow.

I can feel you in the shallows,

pushing and pulling me into a fight

I would much rather hide from,

but I succumb to the riptide

and you consume my lungs.

I can’t rid my skin of your touch.

I cough up saltwater and blood but

I can’t wash the taste of you from my tongue,

your lips rough against mine.

whispered like a sin.

every time I think of you, I flinch.

and every time I try to fight it,

you always win.
