I am sweet like a peach
and easily bruised, too.
my skin too thin
for a world so cruel.
my pitted heart
is heavily guarded
and thoroughly hardened.
I am quietly brave,
a timid face,
but courageous
in all the ways
I am too afraid
to let you see.
I’d rather cave in,
collapse the tunnels
beneath my skin,
and fill them in
with cement
than let you in
to see the beauty
of my ruin.
I’m the type of girl
who brakes for butterflies
in a world that
doesn’t blink twice
at splattered wings
and other broken things.
I break brake for anyone
who promises love.
I come to a full-stop,
unlock every door
and let them take
but after all this time
believing so many lies,
I remain hopeful like
dawn after a long night.
I know the darkness
will come again,
but I continue
to rise.
