I keep your heart locked

in my bedside drawer.

Not a locker,

not a safe,

because I swore

to keep it close

even after

you went away.

Close enough

I can hear it say,

“I will always

beat for you,

only you.”

Close enough

its muffled rhythm

lulls me to sleep

on nights I miss you

too deeply

to find peace.

Close enough

to touch,

to feel the faded

pulse of your love.

If only I hadn’t

lost the key,

maybe I could

hold your heart

close to me

one more night.
