A WOMAN TO BEHOLD

Updated: Feb 4, 2023

an old man

stopped me in

the parking lot one day.

we exchanged smiles, pleasantries,

and, inevitably, he hit on me.

but not in the way you think.

he said,

you will be beautiful

for the rest of your life.

he told me,

when you look in the mirror,

it will tell you lies, so, please, don’t cry.

he said,

when you look in the mirror

for flaws, stop and smile instead.

you will be beautiful long after you’re dead.

he told me,

when you are old and grey,

you will look back and say,

“I wish I looked the way I used to,” but don’t,

because you are beautiful down to the bone.

he said,

God’s greatest work of art was woman.

and if I looked in the mirror and insulted myself,

it would make God cry, and He has enough to cry about.

I hugged him goodbye and wandered inside,

immediately writing this down in my mind.

I thought to myself,

how can I take his words and make them mine?

how can I tell someone else the same things he told me

in a way they need to hear it?

the way I needed to hear it?

but they say,

God has a unique way of

getting messages to you

when you need them the most.

so, here goes:

you are beautiful,

a work of art from

head to toe.

heart and soul,

you are a sight

to behold.
